In Mae's files
Marita Lorenz (1939–2019), the German-born woman who had been Fidel Castro's lover in 1959 and later said the CIA sent her back to Cuba to poison him. In September 1977 she told the New York Daily News that she had driven from Miami to Dallas with Frank Sturgis and a man she called Oswald in the days before the assassination. Mae takes up her story the week it breaks, in broadcast No. 288; start there, at the segment that closes the program.

Enters as the week's news: a press interview Mae takes as confirmation of work she had already done
September 26, 1977
Mae reads where the story ran, and where it didn't, as the week's proof of her press thesis: the outlets Bernstein names as CIA conduits passed over a witness to Dallas.
The New York Daily News story of 20 September 1977, which friends in New York sent her.
"She came forward last week, Marita Lorenz. It was not in the Washington Post or the New York Times or the Associated Press or any of the newspapers listed as CIA conduits."Mae Brussell, Mae Brussell Research Center, Broadcast 3 (26 Sep 1977), 37:23
Mae sets out the account the rest of the segment hangs on: a named witness placing a Watergate burglar and an Oswald on the road to Dallas.
"This woman says she drove to Dallas, Texas from Miami with Lee Harvey Oswald and Frank Sturgis several days before John Kennedy was killed."Mae Brussell, Mae Brussell Research Center, Broadcast 3 (26 Sep 1977), 37:53
Mae marks the limit of her source before she builds on it: a press conference, not testimony under oath.
"This evidence or testimony isn't sworn testimony. It isn't before the committee. It's an interview."Mae Brussell, Mae Brussell Research Center, Broadcast 3 (26 Sep 1977), 39:54
Mae values Lorenz less as a new lead than as corroboration of a thesis she had been building for years.
"But she is an important witness because of the work I've done on the Oswald Doubles."Mae Brussell, Mae Brussell Research Center, Broadcast 3 (26 Sep 1977), 42:33
