Opening: the hearings resume
Mae Brussell
Hello. We're suffering from an information overload, as usual. I keep trying to analyze why there's so much coming down. This time the Watergate hearings have resumed as of today. And for those of you who have never heard Dialogue Conspiracy before, I've been on this program one hour a week for two years, talking about political assassinations in the United States, the people behind the murder of Robert Kennedy, John Kennedy, and Mary Kopechne and George Wallace, those murders and other murders. But the ones that affected the electoral process were the ones that I've been studying in depth. For nine years, it'll be ten years this November, and when the Watergate story broke, I realized that the men arrested at the Watergate Hotel were involved going all the way back to Dallas, the same White House, the same modus of operation. And so as the story unfolds in Washington, and each day there's a shocker in the news or new revelations, I have to take that material and relate it to my past research. It isn't difficult to do that, it's just that there's so much of it. There's only so many hours in the day. The Washington Post had a wonderful article on the anniversary of the Watergate arrests.
It was the Sunday, June 17th issue, if any of you can send for it.
The Post’s chronology and the 1970 plan
Mae Brussell
The Washington Post Outlook, it's called. That's the editorial section. And they have a large article on the cause of the Watergate, the excitement and the arrests. And then a chronology of the Watergate all the way through up to the present, the important breaks that came through from June 17th until June 17th. And they have a list of some of the code names which are important, the aliases, and I'll mention a few today, and if we have time I'll go into more of them. The important thing, one of the things, the way the article began was it said the epic detective story that began a year ago this morning. With a third raid burglary still holds the nation's government in suspense, an obsession undiminished by the absolute overload of startling clues.
Archibald Cox has asked for clues across the country about the Watergate operations, referred to variously by Louis Tackwood as Squad 19, G. Gordon Liddy's papers, the Gemstone papers. The Operation Intercept inside the White House. The Watergate affair, the chronology has some interesting points because in the safe of Howard Hunt and then that John Dean had were papers of a Gestapo, a police state plan, which the president, with his full deniability, has said was inoperative. And the chronology of the Watergate said that in July 23, 1970, President Nixon approved of an intelligence plan which included expanded domestic surveillance, electronic surveillance, surreptitious entry, which means breaking and entering in any home or office that you want, opening mail or other aspects, and operations, which we have not seen yet, that are classified, that are included in these documents.
Supposedly, President Nixon approved of the plan July 23, 1970, and then on July. 28th, the intelligence plan was rescinded because of the opposition of J. Edgar Hoover. The date it was rescinded is a lie. The government lies. If you listen to John Dean today's testimony, you get five hours of a political profile of the entire White House, the way they think, the way they get vengeance, the way they come down on the opposition, the way they conceal, the way they cover each concealment and lie. The, a judge in. Seattle, the hometown of John Ehrlichman by the name of Sharp, Judge Morell Sharp, was invited to Washington, D.C., and that was in the paper this week. In the end of December 1970 and in January 1971, he had a desk at the White House for two weeks. They asked him to head the espionage squad, the intelligence operation that the President of the United States said ended in July. That same December and the following January. They were looking for a man to head this operation. The judge backed down and won the excuse. of Joe Magruder or Herb Porter or all the people involved in the Watergate that they're not doing anything that everyone else does is a lie because people have the option to refuse being a criminal and a crook.
Judge Morell Sharp was in Washington two weeks. He had a desk there at the White House. He went to meetings when he found out that the domestic intelligence plan was secret. Top secret was operating against people inside the United States and was not known by anybody. except the White House team, he refused it and went back to Seattle and had no part of it. But the very fact that they were hiring a head of it, a man to head it, in December and January means that it wasn't shelved on the 28th. Now what happened was it was moved with agents of the Justice Department and Mr. Sullivan, formerly of the FBI, and Robert Martin, the Assistant Attorney General. And John Dean, who worked in the Justice Department, was in the White House. The operation has been working full plan. It worked in 1966. They came together to effect the 1968 election. His modus operandi to kill or discredit anybody opposing Richard Nixon, his election is always put into action two years before the election takes place. This team was continuing working, but they shelved the overt plans until J. Edgar Hoover was dead. And I maintain that he was murdered and then Patrick Gray would come in and stop all investigations of their criminal activity in the event there'd ever been any arrests made.
Judge Sharp has made it very clear that that operation was, they certainly intended to keep that operation going and interviewed him for the job. Well, in the past, we've talked on these different programs about those people that stand in the way of Richard Nixon's election. And in the news this week... There was an article that was a, there were several things. One was the blackmail attempt of Howard Hunt against the White House. And it fit into a lot of the other research I've done on political assassinations in that when he wanted money from the White House and he realized that he could just about have any fee he wanted because of what he knows.
Hunt’s manuscript and the book deals
Mae Brussell
And this came out in the John Dean testimony today that he could really get Ehrlichman and the whole team in trouble. and Richard Nixon Said, well, a million isn't much, I can raise a million. And Howard Hunt could blackmail the White House all the way back to Dallas. He knows what happened at all the electoral, when it came time for elections, I'm sure that he could spill the beans on all these things. And he was blackmailing the White House. So the way the message comes to the White House, the threats he makes to the White House, come in a form like this. This is from the Washington Post. He had written, Howard Hunt had written 40 spy and sex novels, but this is the way he tells the investigative sources. He says, in quotes, the writer has a manuscript or a play to sell. Now what that means is, you pay me the money, and I won't, I'll sell you my manuscript. In other words, you can keep it. You see, the minute Marina Oswald was taken by the Secret Service into custody, And after her husband was killed, and she had framed all this evidence and planted it against him and allowed his name to be associated with the killing of John Kennedy when he hadn't killed him, she was writing, in quotes, a book.
And the people that she was working with were the people that had worked, Isaac Don Levine had worked with Richard Nixon all of his political career, and in the Alger Hiss case and farther back than that, he had worked supposedly fighting communists, and he just came out with a book about Marina Oswald. A lot of... people that worked with Marina Oswald and Svetlana Stalin offered Marina $125,000 to write a book. That is a payment for not talking. They buy the rights and buy their silence. Arthur Bremer had a book. There was one about James Earl Ray that would supposedly pay his legal fees. Robert Kaiser wrote one about Sirhan Sirhan. These books are pure pieces of fiction. And the money supposedly goes to the alleged assassin for his defense, and then he gets railroaded to jail anyway. But the money goes through a lot of hands, and he thinks he's had a legal case presented in the court, which he soon finds out isn't what really happens. That doesn't take place. But the blackmail, the description in the Washington Post that Howard Hunt sends, that the writer has a manuscript for a play to sell, is exactly the way these other books were sold. by the alleged assassins or somebody close to them to keep them quiet.
This week, the news also had a long story in the Washington Post.
Colson sends Hunt to Bremer’s apartment
Mae Brussell
Regarding the shooting of George Wallace, that as soon as George Wallace was shot, this is the articles by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, as soon as George Wallace was shot, Charles Colson picked up the phone and called Howard Hunt in Maryland and said, go to Bremer's apartment in Milwaukee. This is what he wanted him to do, and bring back information that is useful in linking Bremer to left-wing causes. Now, When we've talked about past political assassinations, I've made the point on different programs that as soon as a crime is committed, the federal government and the agents plant evidence against the alleged assassins to make them look guilty. Then they call in the news media and Life Magazine, while it was still existing, would photograph what would become the cover story and the real facts would be concealed. In the case of the Sharon Tate-LaBianca murder, Death to the Pigs was written in blood on the door of Sharon Tate's home, and then the credit cards of the LaBiancas were left in the black part of town to blame the blacks. And the man who wrote that blacks were involved in killing Sharon Tate and the five people in her home, or Mr. and Mrs. LaBianca, was Ed Butler of Army Intelligence, who worked with Lee Harvey Oswald, who, by ordering Tex Watson and the Texas boy in his paramilitary operation to write Death to the Pigs, There... Making you think the Panthers did this massacre.
The same thing happened with Arthur Bremer. They found a Black Panther newspaper. When Mark Essex, the agent provocateur, was killed in New Orleans on the police killings, the men who helped him got away. Essex was murdered. There was on the wall, Death to the Pigs, written near his home on a wall that was found later. Well, in Bremer's apartment, after the FBI let the newspaper... people come in and take lots of pictures and they found a comic sex book, a messy room, and a Black Panther newspaper. The image being that the hippies like these crazy comics, the room is disarranged, he is sympathetic to Black Panthers, and thank goodness it isn't Republican that tried to kill George Wallace. Then the next step is that they call in the press and Charles Colson famous for this. He's telling you Howard Hunt to get over and look in and make sure, you know, find the leftist stuff that would be in the apartment. He doesn't say on the phone, I want you to plant it. That's what Howard Hunt's blackmail is over the White House. So far he's protecting to the point that he's just supposed to see if it's in there, but you know it's going to be in there. And then Charles Colson calls the press.
After Charles Colson ordered Howard Hunt to forge Kennedy's name to the orders to kill Diem in Vietnam, He called in Life Magazine and showed them that little forgery and said, look what President Kennedy did. When they wanted to smear something about Senator Tydings to discredit him so he couldn't win the election, Charles Colson called in Life Magazine. When they wanted to make a situation with Arthur Bremer, they'd find little pieces of information in the apartment that would make him look like he was aligned to leftist causes. But the Washington Post and the FBI couldn't figure out, you know, why the press came there before the FBI, how they get into the apartments to find all these goodies. And I think it's very interesting that Howard Hunt gets a call from the White House, and the White House would involve themselves. Another thing on the hearings this morning, John Dean's hearings, and we're going to talk at length about the Chappaquiddick, isn't it? Was it Ulasewicz, Mr. Ulasewicz, Mr. Caulfield's friend, the man who receives... $20,000 a year, 22, from Mr. Kalmbach for espionage money, was up at Chappaquiddick at the time Mary Jo Kopechne was killed. And he's telling the press all the bad things about the accident that happened to Senator Ted Kennedy.
That came out in the hearings this morning. The reason he's up at Chappaquiddick is concealed so far, but I think people in the country are going to begin to put some of this together, that Hunt and Colson and Ulasewicz and all these people are involved. In these particular operations, because as you watch the Watergate hearings that resume today, you have to know that all the effort to cover things up that's going on just can't be about bugging the Democratic offices. It's a large espionage operation. The article about Hunt being called from Colson, he said he didn't get to the apartment. It was a long ride and he might be discovered. But he didn't say that he didn't send somebody else. He was afraid he would get recognized if he got there, because from Maryland to Milwaukee, maybe the police would be in there by the time he got there. And he also made a point of saying there was nothing about a... break-in involved, which means that Howard Hunt didn't get paid as much money from the White House as he expected. So he's letting out a little clue by particularly telling the grand jury in Washington that he wasn't supposed to break in. Then somebody had the apartment, the key to Bremer's apartment. And also, we know that the CIA supplied the locksmiths for the hotel rooms in Florida and for what they needed for the operation to get into the Democratic headquarters. quarters, and they had something to do with the duplicate sets of keys at the Ambassador Hotel when Robert Kennedy was killed.
There was nothing about a break-in at Bremer's apartment. They would walk in.
A man with a New York accent
Mae Brussell
Now, there was a man with a New York accent with Arthur Bremer up in Michigan who was described, and the same man, the same physical description, the same weight, was seen on the freeway in Maryland right after George Wallace was shot, and he had a New York accent. The one in Michigan had a distinct New York accent. And when James McCord got a threat on his life, when James McCord wouldn't say that he was guilty and plead guilty and go to jail quietly, and Mr. Caulfield was pressuring him three different times, then McCord receives a phone call with a New York accent that was Mr. Ulasewicz. So there's nothing said yet about whether Mr. Ulasewicz went up there to plant the evidence. But the evidence was planted in Arthur Bremer's apartment. And as I say, there was no explanation of why the apartment was not guarded in the case of Arthur Bremer. But the script that the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the FBI used in every one of these assassinations is so run down and overworn that soon enough, as I relate all my research for the last nine years, You'll begin to see these duplications.
At the time Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested at the theater, the Oak Cliff section in Dallas, police went right away to the home where his wife lived. And Mr. and Mrs. Paine said, come right in, we're expecting you. No search warrant, no inventory. They took boxes away that night, came back the next day, and the police listed them, and Michael Paine didn't even stay home while they listed them. He went to market like it was just an ordinary day while they had a ball, brought the stuff. back and then began to inventory it. It had been gone 24 hours in the Dallas Police Department. Same thing with going to Oswald's room. No search warrant or anything. Communist literature piled all over the place. Never fingerprinted or identified that Oswald owned it or read it. Ruby's apartment after he shot Oswald? Same thing. People go in. The three men that entered first that went through the apartment were all killed. Shortly afterwards, every single one of them was dead. Bremer's apartment, they came in, messed it all up, photographed it. And one of the important things is Colson calling him from the White House, told him to go from Maryland to Milwaukee. The FBI wouldn't be there for four hours. How did the White House know when the FBI would arrive at the apartment, even if it was one hour or 25 minutes?
Because if they have the name of his apartment, as quickly as they could call Hunt and tell him to get there, They could call the FBI to close off the building right then. So the White House knew exactly where to go. They knew where to send Hunt as soon as George Wallace was shot. They knew to arrive first.
Nixon and the Wallace shooting
Mae Brussell
And then Hunt said to the grand jury, the president was deeply upset about the shooting on George Wallace, that he wanted to make sure that someone with ties to the Republican Party didn't have anything to do with it. Because he said if the tie existed, it would cost him the election. Well, the Wallace thing was hushed up by Patrick Gray. He had just been in the FBI a few days. Staying at the Waldorf Astoria, Mr. Ulasewicz and Caulfield lived in New York. They never said where he stayed. They never said his reservations, where they came. The Lord Elgin Hotel in Canada, where Richard Nixon was at the time speaking, and he was in the audience. He stayed at the Sheridan Hotel in Maryland, owned by the ITT people. It took many airplane trips. Arthur Bremer had a lot of mobility. He spent quite a bit of money, and they knew where he was, and Richard Nixon was telling Colson it would be an embarrassment to the Republicans. It certainly would be an embarrassment. Now, Colson had dinner with the president the night of the Wallace shooting, and he said the president was overjoyed that it wasn't a Republican that was involved. I should think he would be overjoyed. George Wallace was shot because in 1971 Richard Nixon took George Wallace in an airplane and made a deal that he should go on a democratic ticket and not split the party as an independent because it would hurt his chance to re-election.
He had John Mitchell meet with Jeb Magruder at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with the Nazi Party to transfer the re-registering in California and tamper with that process. And then the Justice Department put a squeeze on Wallace's brother, who was just cleared last week of certain charges that he would have been made against him. I think it's very interesting that the White House should involve itself with sending their top agents that have handled all their delicate situations. right into the Wallace shooting. Now, the testimony today got off to a really good start. John Dean was up about five minutes before he let out a little piece of information that will be of interest to a lot of people. He started to say that in late 71, Egil Krogh and David Young set up the plumbers inside the White House that were supposed to be checking leaks on the Pentagon Papers.
Dean’s testimony and Chappaquiddick
Mae Brussell
These actually were an attack. group, but he said the pre-election, the pre-election in 1969, in the summer of 69, thrived on political intelligence, and the Justice Department worked with Kleindienst, and they called Mr. DeLoach of the FBI about the foreign travels of Mary Jo Kopechne. Now, I've done a lot of research. There's three books out on the Ted Kennedy accident at Chappaquiddick. I read the whole grand jury testimony. I read all the reports that came out or have come out since. This is the first talk that Mary Jo Kopechne was over in Europe or that the Justice Department kept a watch on where she goes or what she went. Because there was an intelligent agent in front of the cottage the night that she was drowsy, 11 o'clock, got in the back of the car and was sleeping. And I said that she was drugged at that party and asleep. She died from asphyxiation in the car. She didn't die from drowning. She had blood over her blouse and sleeves that came preceding the drowning. Now, at the scene of the investigation, John Dean said it was a Mr. Tony, Tony Ulasewicz, and he was up there at Chappaquiddick, and he was telling the reporters that his job was to give embarrassing information about Senator Ted Kennedy.
Mr. Caulfield. was doing intelligent gathering on Mary Jo Kopechne and Ted Kennedy in the fall of 71. He was also up at Chappaquiddick talking to the police chief. Now, there was 24-hour surveillance on Ted Kennedy, and Mr. Strachan of the White House said, well, he might get wind of this. They were supposed to watch him for 24 hours, see everything he does or where he goes. and the subject came up, will he be suspicious if we give him that much surveillance? And the answer is that he would think someone was attacking him who attacked his brothers. Therefore, he would call in the FBI for protection, and the FBI would be there legitimately, so he couldn't say he was tailed, and then they could return information back to the White House. Now, that's an interesting piece of information because, for those who have heard this show before, I've said that. A private security guard killed Robert Kennedy in the Ambassador Hotel. Somebody hired to protect him, shot him from the back of the head. Sirhan did not fire the fatal bullet. So you have a protection unit put upon Senator Ted Kennedy if he gets wind. So either way, he's under constant surveillance.
And if he gets wind of what's happening, he'll call the FBI. And then they're sure that they have their man watching him. Jack Anderson had an article. This last week on Howard Hunt and the Ted Kennedy investigation, that he went to investigate Ted's role at Chappaquiddick, that Colson sent him again in July 71, and he talked to him with Mr. DeMoe, confidential information of the police department. The entire island and the police department there is very anti-Kennedy, they're very anti-democratic, but staunch Republicans, very conservative, didn't appreciate the... Kennedy clan coming up there particularly for the regatta or anything about it so that we have Ulasewicz and Caulfield and the whole team all interested in the accident but Dean spilled the beans today that they were interested in Mary Jo Kopechne. Now Mary Jo was a secretary from the CIA intelligence that was placed inside the Democratic Party to squeal and keep watch. She came from Senator Smathers of Florida from his office He's out of office now as a senator, but he's a very important lobbyist. A friend of Richard Nixon's, a close friend of Richard Nixon, a Bebe Rebozo.
She worked closely associated with Smathers, and her girlfriend, her roommate, worked for Bobby Baker. Bobby Baker got arrested. A girlfriend died, she was killed. Mary Jo worked and infiltrated the Kennedy camp and she was killed. The girls are expendable. This is a war. It's shocking to people how expendable Dorothy Hunt is. Or Mary Jo Kopechne, they're sacrificed on the altar of the election. I've been writing the article of Murderville and I say these people are sacrificed. Mary is sacrificed on the altar of the 1972 election. Instead of Jesus, it's Mary this time, and she's on the cross, and she goes down so that Ted Kennedy doesn't have to be the president.
Mary Jo Kopechne
Mae Brussell
He won't be the president of the United States, and that takes care of the biggest opponent that Richard Nixon was going to have in 1972. The whole Watergate team is involved in all of these operations. There is a book out. There's several books out on Chappaquiddick. There's one called The Education of Edward Kennedy, a family biography. And it's written by Burton Hersh, and it's supposed to be an excellent book. Bob Cutler helped him, Bob Cutler from Massachusetts, who's doing his own book on Chappaquiddick. And this is a book called The Education of Edward Kennedy. Bob Cutler is a man who, he was on my program about a year and a half ago, who wrote a book on the bullet 399, the impossibility of this particular bullet, killing John Kennedy and traveling the way the Warren Commission said it worked. And in this book, The Education of Ted Kennedy, it goes into a lot of facts about the car that was found 40 feet off the bridge, and it was not going fast at all. It was going about 20 miles an hour. And the time it went in, supposedly at 11.30 at night, there were six feet of water. The tide was out, and there were six feet of water. It goes into the fact of Kennedy's blow on the right mastoid of the head.
Close behind his right ear, I said he had a concussion, that Mary was drugged, and that he was semi-conscious. He was hit from behind and woke up at a hotel. It goes into Gargan and Markham, the two people that were supposed to get help. They went down to the bridge with him. There were two lighted houses and a fire station on the way that they had to pass, and they didn't go to any of those when the diving rescue team was there and could have helped them right away. Mr. Gargan, who's Ted Kennedy's cousin, Said that he received injuries trying to get the car door open or helping Ted Kennedy. Nobody saw the injuries. The tide was impossible. It was in direct conflict with what Ted Kennedy said about swimming back. There was damage on the mirror of the car that could not be explained in the event that the car went over the way they said it did. It actually was toppled over. There were discrepancies and Mary being in the front seat. Which Ted Kennedy said because in the back she was sitting well in the back seat and it would be hard for her to get in the position she was in if she started out in the front seat. The book goes into the blood on her blouse on the back of the sleeves. It couldn't be done underwater all the time that they said she was underwater.
The police officials who brought her in, they didn't see bloodstain on the blouse when they signed their papers, but it was very clear that the bloodstain was there. They gave her a... 0.9% alcohol in her blood when 0.10% is the level of legal drunkenness, and the one thing she never did, she was a notorious non-drinker. Ted Kennedy came over from the mainland of the island the next morning and called the officials when he said, I realized what happened. He had gone downstairs at his hotel, had breakfast, acted perfectly normal, And then. He came back on the ferry and saw his car and was told there was this dead body in it. Sheriff Look saw Kennedy's Oldsmobile at another point in the evening. It was about 1 o'clock in the morning and identified the license plate, the number, other people sitting in the car. And then the next morning this car was at the bottom of Poucha Pond. There are a lot of people involved in the drugging of Mary Kopechne, in her murder. framing Senator Ted Kennedy, but I think as the Watergate goes on, a lot of people are presenting evidence to Mr. Cox, Archibald Cox, about the Robert Kennedy murder, the John Kennedy murder, Mary Kopechne's death, and I think Howard Hunt testifying this week to the grand jury about that incident in Bremer's apartment is important.
I think the Dean talking about Mary Kopechne right now is very important. To throw her in before they even got to Richard Nixon. If you heard the testimony this morning or you listened to it this evening, the very fact that they beat in the whole thing with Mary Kopechne is just tossing out something that... And the newsmen... CBS, NBC, the news analysts won't touch the Mary Kopechne thing, if you notice. They're just on other details. Nobody wants to make the connections about the deaths. Now, the issue of the Washington Post had a resume of a lot of the aliases and code names. There were two that were interesting to me this week, but the overlap of names of the Watergate people, a very complicated espionage operation.
You can underestimate the complexity of what's unfolding there in Washington. You can't simplify it no matter how you try.
Code names: Wisdom, Sandwedge, Sedan Chair 88, Raoul
Mae Brussell
Mr. Ehrlichman's code name came out today. It's Mr. Wisdom. If there's any name that doesn't apply to that particular gentleman, Wisdom is the name because I think of being so harsh and just... bulldozing his way through everybody, and Wisdom has a different connotation. Mr. Bully, Mr. Ehrlichman calls himself, his code name is Wisdom. Some of the names that came out that have been coming out all along, like George Leonard as George Liddy, and Edward Warren, and Edward Hamilton as Howard Hunt, and McCord also used the name Edward Warren, the same as Howard Hunt. Those were supplied by the CIA. But the two names that caught my eye, one was Sandwich, And that. When I heard the testimony of John Caulfield, I thought it was Sandwich, W-I-C-H, but the name is Sandwedge, W-E-D-G-E. Now, Caulfield was in the White House doing dirty tricks with Mr. Colson Richard Nixon in 69, and now that I think about him being up at Chappaquiddick, Sandwedge seems appropriate if you think of what was wedged in the car. That would be a very appropriate name for Caulfield. would be Sandwedge because Ted Kennedy's car is the one thing I can think of that would justify his having this particular name.
There was another name that came out this week, Sedan Chair 88. Now, there was a sedan chair before that came out. Sedan Chair referred to, in the Senate hearings, to a Nixon campaign committee operation in 1972 to one committee operation in 1972 against Hubert Humphrey. That was called Sedan Chair, and somebody followed Hubert Humphrey. But Sedan Chair 88 is Michael McMinoway, a volunteer security guard who followed Hubert Humphrey into Miami and Pennsylvania and California. Well, if there's Sedan Chair 88, I wonder if it runs 1 to 87 around the country, because when Donald Segretti was arrested, he hasn't been indicted, but when he first surfaced as an agent provocateur, who was linked to Herbert Kalmbach and Dwight Chapin and Richard Nixon and Howard Hunt, he said that he was one of 50 agents. And I wondered if there was one for each state and that he was the California agent because he's one of 50 and we don't know who the other 49 are. But Sedan Chair 88 was down in Florida. And what he did, he heard Frank Mankiewicz having a conversation about Um, Tom Eagleton's mental condition before it surfaced, before he was nominated for the vice president, a lot of people feel that inside the camp of McGovern, that he was sabotaged right from the beginning by Kennedy people who wanted to leave the operation open for Kennedy in 72.
His strength, again, in 72, and not have a Democrat now, that that kind of, with a deal being arranged, of course, Frank Mankiewicz would deny that, but Mankiewicz knew about Eagleton and... His hospitalization evidently was playing dumb about that, and Sedan Chair 88 surfaced this week to reveal it. Now, besides Sandwedge and Sedan Chair and Mr. Watson and Cleo and Viola Smith and Gene Valdez and Bill Johnson, these are all your aliases, there's about 30 of them. There was another interesting one. Mr. Gonzalez, Virgilio González, had the code name or the alias Raoul, R-A-O-U-L. which is an assumed name that he used at various times, and he also used the name G-O-B-O-Y, or R-A-U-L. Well, for those who have done research into the Martin Luther King assassination or the James Earl Ray, Ray got out of jail and went to his safe house. It was a trailer waiting for him with wine and food. It was a rainy night. He went on to Illinois where he picked up a car. a new Social Security card under the name of Raines was ready for him so he could get jobs in Illinois. Went on to Canada. He had passports of Eric Starvo Galt and Eric Bridgman and Raines and Larry Raines.
And then he came back from Canada to Birmingham, Alabama, where he met a man named Raoul, and he met him in Louisiana, and he met him on Camp Street at the same office that Lee Harvey Oswald used to go. And I'm wondering, because this team worked together since 1961 in the Bay of Pigs, I wonder if the Raoul that James Earl Ray was referring to is this name that Gonzales... It would be interesting to compare the descriptions and go back. I'll have to look into my early clippings and see how much... James Earl Ray said about Raoul, he wouldn't disclose who he was, but one of the men at the Watergate comes up with that name now. There are a few things at the hearings that I want to talk about that Dean talked about that caught my eye.
Demonstrators and the Brookings plan
Mae Brussell
One of them was the fact that Richard Nixon did not want any signs of demonstrators in his presence or outside the White House. He saw a poster once and said, go after that man. Use any means necessary, and they asked if they should send the goon squad. And he said, no, that's not necessary. We'll take care of it. And the Secret Service came out, and they took the sign away and took the person away. The goon squad would have been there. They wanted to stop all demonstrations to make Richard Nixon look at election time that he was popular, and he had an aversion. He hated it. The anti-war protesters, he had the secret group turn in information about them, and when it didn't please them that there weren't enough of them and they weren't violent enough, he told his intelligence unit, and quote, that wasn't what he was looking for. He wanted a little more meat to pack up something to crash down on them, and he didn't find it. In 1971, Dean said Charles Colson wanted a bombing, a robbery at Brookings Institute. And then they would burn the place down to hide the robbery. Charles Colson has denied this.
The deniability is the great cloak behind all the operations. But to show that John Dean isn't impossible in his testimony, I followed up some information I got about a clue when I was in San Francisco on KGO last summer when the Realist article first came out. I got a very nice letter. From a man in the CIA who left the letter anonymous, but was typed in a nice stationery, and he sent me an anonymous letter that a particular man who works in the Central Intelligence Agency, who worked for the San Francisco Examiner as a writer, had lived up in the Seattle area, worked with James McCord, worked with Liddy, was part of the same operation that he flew back and forth all the time to Washington, that he was part of this operation. He burned down two churches of his own, set them down, the arson, in order to blame the hippies, so the community would come down against the hippies. He'd give a sermon, I guess, about the young generation. The two churches burned down. He came to San Francisco to work for the Examiner. And so I asked people to do a certain amount of investigation about the man. He used to live in Carmel. He lived at Pebble Beach, has family that live there now in the Monterey Peninsula.
This particular man left the Examiner just... a few months ago, and he's at Langley, Virginia now, back with the CIA, I guess. But the CIA does burn, have their ministers burn their churches to make the town come down against the hippies. So it didn't surprise me that Charles Colson, the CIA liaison with the White House, the main one, would suggest let's burn the Brookings Institute. They were doing studies critical of the Vietnam policy, so they said let's burn them down. The president won a list of the act. The activists, so he could get even with them later, go into their tax papers and find out, he put in an order with Ulasewicz, and I said, find out what's going on and give me a list.
Lists, San Diego and martial law
Mae Brussell
He wanted a complete list of the activists that were criticizing him. Dean said that Mr. Liddy was down in San Diego looking over the scope of the security problems. Louis Tackwood said he was there trying to create a situation of martial law and rounding up radicals. The San Diego police had no record of John Dean at all. It was a private operation working with the Justice Department to bring in radicals and then to arrest the leaders. Dean had the idea of kidnapping them. The operation intercept inside the White House was to create martial law and arrest them. That would be a lot easier than kidnapping. Liddy also had the idea of microwaves to intercept communications and bleep out speeches. That has to do, and it's a very important part, of keeping the communications away from certain people while others have an open line. Last July, you know, three weeks after the Watergate, I wrote a comparison between the positions. The people in the White House at the time the Watergate arrest took place, the importance of their own radio bands, their own walkie-talkies, and compared it to the Greek military junta and the overthrow of Greece, and that the same people were in the White House planning the overthrow of America that overthrew Greece.
Well, today they're a subject about microwaves intercepting communications and bleeping out the speeches. That way they would have control of the media. and the radio and those people that were involved in the martial law plan of rounding up radicals could communicate. The other people in the nation in San Diego couldn't get together.
Walters, Kalmbach and April 7
Mae Brussell
When it came time to cover up the story of the Mexican money, which was getting kind of sticky because it had to do with CIA washing and Texas money, you see Dean and Hunt and McCord are still bargaining for a short sentence. and for executive clemency and to be paid off. So they're not spilling very many beans. They're just laying one or two out of the bottle. But they did bring up the point that General Walters, when he balked at the suggestion of the CIA take responsibility for the entire Watergate affairs, they made the remark, call Walters and ask him how he got where he was. How does he think he got where he did if he didn't do things for us? In other words... You get your promotions if you work for us. You got there being part of the team. And how do you think you made it if you didn't, you know, work along with us? And you're not going to make it if you don't, you know, cooperate now. So they wanted the CIA to take the rap and say it was national security. You can't investigate. The CIA didn't want to do that. They didn't want to get involved in the Watergate operation that way, at least. Now, Dean said also that Herbert Kalmbach didn't want to involve himself with fundraising after April the 7th. See, April the 7th was the date where people could give to the Republican Party and remain anonymous, and that's where the heavy money for the Greek military, the CIA, the CIA foundations were pouring in their money before April the 7th. Now, Mr.
Kalmbach worked with the espionage operations. He was a lawyer who raised a lot of money that went into the secret funding. We heard Maurice Stans say that a lot of the money comes just prior to the election, that those are the big days of the pitch. And yet Herbert Kalmbach said after April 7th, he wasn't interested in raising money. He was only involved up to April 7th, which would indicate that his money is illegal money, secret money, that if broken down, corporations aren't supposed to give to the president. Funds were given to raise the price of milk and special funds to conceal profits. Then people get criminal investigations if they did give his corporations.
Kalmbach's job was to raise as much money by April the 7th, and Dean brought that out, which means that it isn't all clean, legitimate money, or he would have raised it at any point. But his cutoff was April the 7th. Now, one of the things that I put in the article last July was that Judge Richey would not be impartial, that he could be used by the President and the White House. Because, see, he's the man who was in favor of that crime law of no knock in Washington, D.C., rounded up the radicals, arrested them. So his mind was to come down on all the hippies and the youth and the people that didn't like Richard Nixon's war. So it would be impossible with his frame of mind that he would also indict or make trouble for the Watergate defendants. So Judge Richey, according to John Dean, was under control all along. Not Judge Sirica, but that... Mr.
Judge Richey and the president’s enemies
Mae Brussell
McPhee from the White House could work with Judge Richey over the civil suit, and Richey said he would be helpful. And that's an interesting split in judges. One wasn't helpful, and one said he would be. In other words, he would keep the conversation limited to certain discussions. It wouldn't get too far into the conspiracies. There'd be no embarrassment to the people as the subject came up. I imagine he wanted what the White House calls their linear trials. This is what they do with Sirhan. or the Warren Commission hearings, they block out anything that suggests a conspiracy and leave the investigations to one particular thing. And in the case of the Watergate, with Richey holding that case, they'd limit it to who was at the Watergate Hotel and not what did McCord and Hunt or Liddy do previously that affected the Watergate operation. They were not going to make this an issue and it came out that Judge Richey would be very helpful. The president asked For a list to make life harder with the internal revenue that he'd attack his enemies as soon as the election was over. His plans were to go out and attack them, and Haldeman was to keep a list. Who would stay and who would go, like who in the administration is for the president, who passes the bills, who's a surrogate at election time.
The picture of Richard Nixon, the very obsessed, vindictive man, comes out in the hearings of Dean. It comes out in the other hearings because they... Even if they have a love affair with Richard Nixon and say he's totally innocent, any word they say can be used against him because the man has been behind so much evil and he keeps bringing out the algebra of his case as a great investigative research or the Warren Commission hearing. The dean testimony shows you how he's going to come down on people and hurt them, and he'll call in the Internal Revenue and attack his enemies. And then hold them in to keep a list and make sure that...
